Legal Requirements for Foreigners Getting Married in Hungary
Getting legally married in Hungary as a foreign national is absolutely possible — but it requires precise documentation and strict adherence to Hungarian regulations. Below is a clear and legally accurate overview of the Hungarian marriage requirements for foreigners, reflecting real administrative practice as of the year 2026.
Who Can Legally Get Married in Hungary
Under Hungarian legislation, foreigners are permitted to get married in Hungary. The required documentation varies depending on nationality and passport. As a general rule, both parties must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a valid passport
- Provide a residence permit or residence ID, together with proof of residing address (where applicable)
Required Documents for Foreign Nationals
Birth Certificate
A valid birth certificate must be submitted by both parties.
If issued in a language other than Hungarian:
- An official Hungarian translation is required
- Translations must be completed by the Hungarian official translation authority
- The document must be apostilled
Divorce Certificate or Widow(er) Status Certificate (if applicable)
If either party has been previously married, a divorce decree or widow(er) certificate must be submitted.
If issued in another language:
- An official Hungarian translation by the Hungarian official translation authority is required
- The document must be apostilled
Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage
A Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage is required to confirm that there are no legal obstacles to the marriage. The form and issuance of this document vary by country. Depending on nationality, this document may be:
- A statement signed and certified by the consulate of the applicant’s country
- A specific official certificate issued by the home country (for example, in Germany this process can take up to 60 days)
- A personal declaration certified by a notary
Because requirements differ significantly, early legal guidance is highly recommended.
Application Timeline and Personal Appearance
Foreign couples must submit their application at least 60 days prior to their preferred civil wedding date. Important notes:
- Both parties must appear in person for the appointment
- Applications cannot be submitted by proxy or representative
Civil Wedding Ceremony Options in Hungary
Couples may choose to marry:
- At a registry office, with a selection of available ceremony rooms
- At an external venue of their choice (restaurant, winery, private estate, Danube riverside, etc.)
Civil ceremonies can also be arranged at selected external locations, including private estates, wineries, and other venues suitable for destination weddings in Hungary. Our guide to timeless wedding venues in Budapest offers further inspiration.
Different fees apply for external locations. The civil ceremony takes approximately 40 minutes and is legally conducted in Hungarian. Couples have the right to invite an interpreter, appoint a ceremony artist or actor, and nominate their own interpreter.
Witness Requirements
Witnesses are legally required for a civil marriage in Hungary. Key points:
- Passport copies or residence IDs of witnesses must be submitted with the main application
- Any number of witnesses may attend
- By law, a minimum of two witnesses is mandatory, one representing each party
Religious and Symbolic Ceremonies in Hungary
Religious ceremonies in Hungary are not legally binding but are highly popular !
In most Christian churches, couples must already be civilly married, and a civil marriage certificate is required before a religious ceremony can be scheduled.
Symbolic ceremonies are also not legally binding, but they offer complete creative freedom. Couples may hire professional actors or nominate a friend or family member to officiate.
